BIOPHILIC SPACES IN BUILT ENVIRONMENT

WHAT IS BIOPHILIC SPACE?

BIOPHILIA is derived from bio = life / nature + philia = love / kinship.
It is related to well-being, the relation between nature and mankind. It can also be translated as “ love for living things”.

This is about the five Senses & five Elements. It refers to the basic inclination of a person towards natural forms and organisms. It is also about the selection of natural materials and patterns one creates.Creating a Biophilic space has been practised for a very long time. For the building environment, we use different systems to achieve a similar effect.

In the context of the building construction environment, we can consider Biophilic space as thick foliage, colours and flowers, clear water and water bodies, the sound of water, filtered ambient light, swaying vegetation and breezes, sheltered & safe place, choosing natural materials and patterns and so on.
